For Sama

The award-winning film FOR SAMA, which opened the HRFFB 2019, is a love letter from a young mother to her daughter. FOR SAMA follows the story of Waad al-Kateab for five years, as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, while the terrible conflict spreads around her like wildfire. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival, as Waad struggles with an impossible choice: whether to stay and fight for her freedom or to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life.

In completely sold out screenings and with intensive insights FOR SAMA touched our festival audience.

Honeyland

The release of the repeatedly rewarded film HONEYLAND attracted thousands to the cinema.

In a deserted Macedonian village, Hatidze, a fiftysomething woman in a bright yellow blouse and green headscarf, trudges up a hillside to check her bee colonies nestled in the rocks. Serenading them with a secret chant, she gently maneuvers the honeycomb without netting or gloves. Her treatment of her colony of bees, which live in rock crevices and produce honey, is fairy-tale like.

But even in this seemingly timeless world things change - at some point.
