Code of Conduct

The Human Rights Film Festival Berlin (HRRFB) is committed to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful festival environment. This code of conduct is designed to ensure that equal and respectful treatment is promoted and that an atmosphere of diversity, tolerance and inclusion is created in which all participants feel welcome and respected.

The Human Rights Film Festival reserves the right to exclude individuals from the festival in the event of violations of the code of conduct. We are aware that discriminatory structures and power relations are firmly entrenched in our society – and thus also in film and cinema. That is why we critically examine ourselves as a festival with regard to discriminatory practices and welcome feedback in order to continuously improve.

1. Festival culture

The Human Rights Film Festival Berlin is an international meeting place where people from different cultural and social backgrounds come together. We recognise and value the diversity of different realities of life at our festival. We want everyone to treat each other with care, respect and openness, characterised by receptiveness to different positions and artistic approaches.

Our films often deal with difficult, challenging topics that can be distressing or retraumatising for visitors. In order to create as safe an atmosphere as possible, it is crucial to be mindful of oneself and others, to respect one's own boundaries as well as those of others, and to promote a culture of mutual tolerance.

Together, we bear responsibility for a safe, supportive and appreciative festival environment.

2. Zero tolerance for discrimination and harassment

We condemn any form of discrimination, offensive language, harassment, intimidation, favouritism or abusive behaviour based on gender, religion, ideology, skin colour, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability, (social) background, socio-economic class or age.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to, unwanted physical or verbal attention, offensive comments, or any behaviour that makes others feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or unwelcome.

Discrimination can take many forms, including sexism, racism, colourism, homophobia, biphobia, interphobia, transphobia, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, fascism, ageism, ableism, or other intersectional forms of discrimination.

3. Accessibility and inclusion

Equal Participation as a Human Right
Equal participation of everyone in culture and political discourse is a human right. We actively work to make access as inclusive as possible. At the same time, we want to be transparent that not all events are currently fully accessible for all needs.

Wheelchair Accessibility, Accessibility for People with Mobility Aids
Our festival center, the cinema in the KulturBrauerei, where the majority of our events take place, is largely barrier-free. The Zeiss Großplanetarium is also largely accessible. The Acud Cinema, however, is not wheelchair accessible. All films are shown at least once at a barrier-free venue.

In addition, most of the films will be available for online streaming after the festival period.

Festival for People with Hearing Impairments
We show all films with English or German subtitles.
Unfortunately, we currently do not have audio-described versions for any of our films.

If you need sign language interpretation for another event, please let us know as early as possible so that we can provide interpreters in time. Please contact us at least 7 days before the event at access@hrffb.de with the subject line: Accessibility – Sign Language

Festival for People with Visual Impairments
Currently, none of the festival films are available with audio description.

Festival for People with Low Income
Holders of the Berlin Pass receive discounted admission.

Quiet Room
Due to the structural and spatial conditions of the venues, we are unfortunately unable to provide a quiet room at this time.

If you have questions about the accessibility of a specific event or require specific support, such as sign language interpretation, please contact us at access@hrffb.de

4. Notes on sensitive content

We provide content warnings for certain content in the films that may be distressing and retraumatising. You can find the content notes for all films when purchasing tickets on our website.

You may leave a film screening at any time.

5. Handling incidents and reports

If you observe or experience discrimination or any behavior that deviates from our code of conduct in connection with the festival, you can report the incident to: awareness@hrffb.de. Your concern will be treated anonymously and confidentially. The HRFFB team will respond to every report and take measures to clarify the situation and prevent further incidents.

During our evening events on April 10 and 17 at the cinema in the KulturBrauerei, an on-site awareness team will also be available, which will be clearly introduced at the beginning of the event.

Our awareness service does not provide ongoing psychological counseling. For such support outside the festival period, the following contacts and advisory services are available free of charge, anonymously, and confidentially:
