Content note: Descriptions of torture and sexual violence
An alternative colonial history of Kenya: the Kenya Land and Freedom Army’s struggle for freedom was portrayed as terrorism by the British colonial powers. To this day, it is unclear where exactly its founder Dedan Kimathi was buried after his execution in 1957. His widow Mukami Kimathi no longer has the strength to search for his remains, so her daughter Wanjugu takes the task upon herself. She combines research with her commitment to the remaining freedom fighters – the losers of independence, with no land rights. Her activism achieves more for the last survivors than the efforts of generations of politicians before her.
- Followed by Q&A: The screening on 5 October will be followed by a Q&A with director Meena Nanji.
