The Lakota have survived relocation, exploitation and mass murder – and kept their voice. They are fighting to protect their sacred lands: the ‘He Sapa’ mountains in the state of South Dakota, known as the Black Hills. Since the arrival of the first Europeans in 1492, the sacred mountains have witnessed prolonged warfare, massacres, treaty violations and illegal land grabs by the settler state – driven by gold rush greed. Today, the Lakota are calling for an investigation into forced, state-run boarding schools and are demanding that their land be returned. They are fighting for America to finally acknowledge the debt it owes to Indigenous communities. Against the symbol of white supremacy, Mount Rushmore, they make their demands for self-determination.
