Beyond Red Lines

By MAPS

'We crossed the red line a long time ago. Imagining our future and the future of the planet in our current epoch, the Anthropocene, implies redefining our practices and our link not only with the environment, but also with indigenous peoples, with the use of our non-renewable resources, with the limits we impose on our borders and with our consumption, as well as the impact that all of this implies within the framework of fundamental human rights. The curatorship presents a variety of photographic languages such as documentary photography, participatory photography and conceptual photography. In this sense, the presentation of the selected images of the authors that make up this exhibition aims to be part of a broader whole, not only showing particular realities, but also dialoguing with each other in order to establish a joint story that is a direct witness of the multiplicity of voices, dialogues and actions necessary to rethink the current state of the world.'

About the project
Debate about reproductive rights is often heated. But behind every family planning decision, there is a human story. The Choice is a virtual reality experience (VR) that lets us see from a different perspective the emotional and complex nature behind one woman’s choice. Meet Kristen, a young Indigenous woman from Austin, TX, who dreams of raising a family but instead finds herself facing a dehumanizing system working against her survival. The Choice blends techniques from traditional documentary storytelling, volumetric video capture, and animation to redefine not only how we tell these women’s stories but also the agency in which the audience experiences them and connects with the subject on a deep, emotional level.

From The Main Square

The portrait of social disruption in which a civilisation with all its contradictions blossoms, only to become a danger to itself.

About the project
Encircling a central square, a new town emerges in all its diversity. A crossroad of stories, buildings, hopes, and conflicts. Social ties and cultures take root. People nurture sympathy and care for their equals, but also animosity towards those who are different. It doesn't take long for an "us versus them" atmosphere to take over. "From The Main Square" is an interactive VR experience that invites the viewer to witness the rise and fall of a divided society. A civilization blossoms, with all its contradictions, only to become a danger to itself.

About the project
The film takes audiences through a deeply personal perspective of this epic historical event. Two men from the Partition generation — Ishar Das Arora (voiced by Adil Hussain), an Indian Hindu who migrated from Pakistan to India, and Iqbal-ud-din Ahmed (voiced by Salman Shahid), a Pakistani Muslim who made the opposite journey — share childhood memories of their experiences while playing a board game. As the two men unpack their memories, audiences embody the experience of a 7-year-old child at key points in the migration. Child of Empire offers a powerful counter-narrative that lends a fresh perspective on the effects of forced migration on everyday individuals.

About the project
For his graduation project Niklas Grüter went on board of a container ship, as well as spending time at the seafarer mission in Bremerhaven. He collected photographs and wrote texts, which tell about the motivations to become a seafarer, as well as their struggle. Through a 360° film, one can enter the ship and learn about how life has changed for seafarers, especially during the pandemic. The 9’ minute film consists of images that show the work on board of a container vessel as well as moments of relaxation. Layered over the film, one can hear the testimony of several seafarers, which tell about isolation, their dreams and hopes.
