In 2017, Zahra took her own life after her professor refused to allow her to graduate from Kabul University. Zahra’s parents repeatedly make the long journey from Daikundi to Kabul to demand justice and find answers to their unanswered questions. In this poetic commentary, Freshta tells the story of her older sister Zahra’s life and her passion for her homeland’s ecology. For Zahra, studying did not offer a way out of the historical discrimination faced by the Hazara, especially not after the Taliban’s resurgence. The Afghan directors find powerful images to convey the emotional world of this loving family, who they accompany through their grief over four years.
- Followed by Q&A: The screening on 9 Oct will be followed by a Q&A with director Ilyas Yourish and protagonist Freshta Khawari.
