How to change the world
You wonder: How should I, one person, change the world? It's simple: Do it! We all shape our environment, the people around us, and the society we live in. We all have what it takes to change things for the better. For example, in our opening film SABAYA, activists fight to free Yazidi women from the clutches of IS. WRITING WITH FIRE shows how Indian chief reporter Meera Devi campaigns for equal opportunities and against corruption. THE ANTS AND THE GRASSHOPPER follows the courageous Malawian farmer Anita Chitaya in her fight against climate change.
Want to become an activist too? We have a few ideas:
1. Stand up, organize & be loud!
"It always seems impossible until it is accomplished," Nelson Mandela once said. The resistance fighter against apartheid was one of South Africa's leading activists and the country's first Black president. And if he taught us one thing, it is that it pays to stand up for the things we want to change. The best way to do that is together. Social movements such as #MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter and #FridaysforFuture, for example, have taken strong stands.
War. Democracy. Climate crisis. Famine. Migration. Human rights. Talk about new perspectives and solutions. Argue (and make up). There are countless ways we can make our world better and more sustainable for everyone. The most important thing is to listen to each other and find democratic solutions together.
3. Use your voice and vote!
Worldwide, 75 countries are listed as democracies, but only 23 are "full" democracies – Germany is one of them. In concrete terms, this means that every four years, we are asked to vote and have the privilege of helping decide where our country’s political journey is headed. We should definitely make use of this privilege.
4. Just do it!
You've been thinking for weeks about whether you should help your elderly neighbor with the groceries, or you're annoyed that there aren't enough bike lanes in your city? No matter what inspires you: get active, whether on a small or large scale. So much is possible if we just do it!
