HRFFB goes re:publica

Human Rights Film Festival Berlin presents NOVAYA

On the occasion of re:publica in digital exile 2020, Askold Kurov's impressive portrait of the Novaya Gazeta, one of Russia's last independent newspapers, can be streamed for 24 hours on May, 7 free of charge.
The documentary was awarded with the Willy Brandt Documentary Award for Freedom and Human Rights in 2019 for its intimate observation through a discreet, inconspicuous camera lens. “No staging, no lecture, no commentary - the images we see speak for themselves and bring us closer to a group of heroic advocates of freedom of the press and opinion” argued the international jury.

Interview with director Askold Kurov

NOVAYA

The "Novaya Gazeta" was one of the first independent newspapers of post-Soviet Russia - and almost the last one left. It is a three times Nobel Prize nominee and specializes in investigative reports on topics like terrorism, the Beslan and Panama papers and the persecution of gays in Chechnya. Since 2000, five journalists and one lawyer from the editorial team have been murdered. The probably most dangerous journalist's life you can imagine - in an impressive documentary.

We had the possibility to do an interview with the amazing director Askold Kurov. You can read it here.

Stream available on May 7, 2020 from 00.00 a.m. to 11.59 p.m.
