Children of the Mist

Up in the mists of the mountains of North Vietnam, Di, 14, is caught between two worlds: the traditional life of the Hmong, a culture where women marry young —the tradition of teenage "bride-kidnapping" is still practiced —and the wide world she sees everyday on her smartphone and that she dreams of becoming part of. Di is determined to get an education but one night spent at a boy's house appears to seal her fate, just like that of her mother and sister before her. Di now has to fight: against the adults that see her as chattel, against a centuries-old tradition that appears stronger than her own desire to study, and against her own feelings, fears, doubts and internal contractions. "Children of the Mist" is a moving story of self-empowerment.
